Best Practices

  • It is best practice to have the settings as follows:
    • Do Not Retain URL
    • HTTP 301
    • Do Not Retain Query String
    • Do Not Retain Path
    • Select Match Query String

 

Instructions

  1. Click the Site Tools icon, and then click Redirects
    The cog wheel Site Tools icon, and the URL labeled Redirects in the alphabetical list.
  2. Select desired domain
    The domain on the Web Evolve site, in the All Sites Home column.
    • All Sites: Will apply the redirect to all your domains; this is the recommended option
    • By selecting a specific domain, the redirect will only be active on that domain
      • Note:If you choose this route you will need to add the redirect to both thewww and non-www domains(e.g., www.civicplus.com and civicplus.com).
  3. Select Add Redirect on the right
    The button labeled Add Redirect.
  4. Fill in the appropriate information
    The text entry and check box toggle Redirect fields.
    • Link From: This is the end of the shortened URL, which will display as the redirect
      • Example: /Parade
      • Note: You will need to include the /, do not include a full URL.
      • Note: For security reasons, the following extensions have been restricted from use in the redirects module: .axd and .js.
    • Link To: This is where the shortened URL will go to
      • Example: /78/2017-Annual-Parade
        • A Full URL is the complete web address for a page or website
        • A Relative URL is the ending section of a Full URL, the part of a web address that comes after .com, .gov, .org or whatever the top-level domain of your website might be
    • Retain URL: Controls if the Link From shows once the destination loads
      • Note: By doing this, if a user moves away from the page it will still keep the Link From address.
      • Note: If Retain URL is checked, then by default the Redirect Code is 200 which indicates success.
    • Retain Query String: Controls whether query string parameters will be carried over to the From URL
      • A query string is the part of a URL containing data that does not fit conveniently into a hierarchical path structure; it commonly includes fields added to a base URL by a Web browser or other client application.
    • Retain Path: Controls if the path from From URL shows once the destination loads
    • Match Query String: Controls if the redirect will require the query string to match
    • Display: Controls the redirect to only be active during a certain period of time
  5. Select a saving option at the top of the page
    The buttons labeled Save Changes and Save and Make Active.
    • Save Changes: Save but do not publish/make active
    • Save and Make Active: Save and make active/publish
